It is commonly thought she was born in the Gamtoos valley, but she only moved there with her family years after her birth. She belonged to the cattle-herding Gonaquasub group of the Khoikhoi. It is not your costume nor your plaything. During her short existence, and even after, her body has been the fetish of sadism — one can think of Sade’s Justine — in its spectacular, racist and colonialist aspects. Saartjie is the diminutive nickname form of the name, in the context of her history it amounts to patronising infantilisation.
Referring to an adult with a childish nickname is also a common way to other a person (motivated by racism). I think that this should be taught in history class. Watching this is so depressing.
Yet the false sense of ownership over a woman’s body is ever present.
