Competitive sport for over 50s

Although swimming is considered the most common sport with regards to the elderly, this sport can become boring and repetitive after awhile, unless you really love it. However, competitive sports can become an alternative, with lots of clubs running competitive sports for those over their forties and fifties. We are on the verge of a demographic revolution as the number of people over will double over the next years.


Weightlifting might not be the obvious sport choice for athletes over 5 but it is rapidly gaining in popularity for this age group. Senior athletes like Ray Moon and Jack LaLanne proved the value of weightlifting by remaining competitive in the sport of bodybuilding late into their seventies.

The National Vintage Games is the UK’s first multi- sport event specifically for the over- 50s. I’ve really listened to your feedback and included new team events such as walking rugby and walking netball, as well as official adjudication and optional age-group classifications. Women over 50s definitely need to be fit and healthy.


The media, magazines, and books are filled with articles, knowledge and statistics on the importance of staying fit as you get older. I know keeping healthy maybe a routine for some who had been very active, but joining in a competitive sport can be more exciting. Swimming is without doubt a fantastic sport for over 50s.

I am and had many injuries from competitive sports (downhill skiing, MMA, bodybuilding) over the years and got really sick a couple of years ago.
