According to Maclver and Page, “Social group is any collection of human beings who are brought into human relationships with one another.

Characteristics of Social Group : Following are the important characteristics of social group. The members of a group are inter-related to each other. Simply, a gathering of persons cannot form a group. Mutual relations are considered essential for the formation of a social group. The characteristics of civilization are structure to support a group.

From the moment of birth a human being lives in the family which can be called a group, a unit of social organisation. It is in this group, the child learns group norms, social values and “dos and don’ts” of the society through interaction. No individual has any existence apart from his group. A group is any collection of human beings who are brought into social relationships with one another. Marshal Jones is of the opinion that a social group is ‘two or more people between whom there is an established pattern of interaction.


After making a group their networking with other groups, workers and agency develop their personality. A group is the collection of two or more than two people working together, interacting and interdependent having common goal. Social Aggregates and Categories: If a number of individuals collect at a place, say, to watch the Republic day parade or to see the Prime Minister and her entourage pass by, there exists no relationship between such persons. Such individuals then form a ‘ social aggregate’, and not a social group. Passing to Cooley’s classification of groups, Cooley has classified groups into primary and secondary, though Cooley has never used the term ‘secondary group.

Over time, early humans began to gather at hearths and shelters to eat and socialize. Social Group A collection of people who regularly interact with one another on the basis of shared expectations concerning behavior and who share a sense of common identity. A group of boys discussing the last watched movie is a social group because through their verbal interaction, they are influencing one another. Examples: A family living in a home, group of employees working in a same organization, group of classmates, a group of members of a meeting and so on.


A main focus of sociology is the study of these social groups. Because social interaction among them does not exist.

Therefore social interaction is the basic condition of social groups. Social group is the foundation of society and culture. However, both sociologists and social anthropolo­gists define social structure in terms of the interrelations between the individuals and functioning of these ordered interrelationships in the maintenance of the society.


A social group consists of two or more people who regularly. The definitions given by various social an­thropologists help us to bring out certain characteristics of social structure. Social stratification is the arrangement of individuals or groups into a hierarchy. Here is an insight about the types, characteristics , and examples of social stratification. The three types of social groups are primary, secondary and reference groups.


A primary group is a small social group that contains personal and long-lasting relationships. Some basic understanding of how people behave in groups, the natural progression of group development and how to encourage the group ’s growth is. These rituals serve to unite members of the current religious community not just with each other, but also with their ancestors and their descendants. Rituals can be important components of any social group , religious or not.


Today, most workers are part of a work team. What are the qualities of good team members? A good team member is up front. They have the opposite characteristics of primary groups.


Secondary groups are another type of social group. They can be small or large and are mostly impersonal and usually short term. These groups are typically found at work and school. An example of a secondary group is a committee organized to plan a holiday party at work.


Social group , any set of human beings who either are, recently have been, or anticipate being in some kind of interrelation. The term group , or social group , has been used to designate many kinds of aggregations of humans.
